Date #14: Nightmare On Congress Street…

I hadn’t dressed up for Halloween since I was 12. I had a conversation about this with someone not too long ago. He was surprised that I wasn’t more of a Halloween person because I donned a wedding dress and did the Brides of March Pub Crawl earlier this year. I think Halloween is a fun holiday and I really enjoy seeing how creative people can be. I just haven’t really been inspired to get into it as an adult. So, with Halloween approaching, I found plenty of costume events to encourage me to get off my lazy Halloween butt and join the fun.

I chose to attend Nightmare on Congress Street. It was a sold out Pre-Halloween bash at the historic, and maybe haunted, Hotel Congress. I thought I had picked a pretty easy costume. It was a skeleton body suit and I was going to try to do some simple version of sugar skull makeup on my face. I wanted to just use makeup that I already had, instead of actual face paint because that stuff just doesn’t breathe and feels uncomfortable after a while. I thought it would be easy…

The makeup wasn’t easy.  I started getting myself ready after work and it started to get late really fast. I don’t typically do a lot with eyeshadow in my daily life, and the makeup looks I chose all involved pretty masterful blending and shading with eyeshadow and eyeliner. I messed my eyes up probably three times and changed my makeup look choice once. Blarg!!!! I eventually just gave up on trying to be a makeup artist, slapped that crap on my face and got out the door. I think the final look was fine. It was dark outside anyway!! Here’s the finished look:

I arrived at the event around 10 pm. There was live music on 3 stages, a DJ, and costumes galore. Over 900 people attended this event. The music was really good and the atmosphere was tons of fun,  the costumes were great, but this was definitely an outing that would be best to attend with friends. There was just so much going on and so many people. I was able to chat a little bit with a couple of people, but the place was just in constant costume commotion.

Ghoulish Dance Circle:

I thought being there might feel similar to the Onesie Pub Crawl that I did for Date #2, but is was quite different. It was much easier to be social at the Pub Crawl because the large group had split up into smaller groups, as people made their way from pub to pub. This event was hundreds of people packed into, and roaming, throughout one venue. The pubs along the Pub Crawl in Date #2 were pretty laid back. This place was full of all kinds of controlled, festive chaos.

It was also a pretty competitive environment. I had to stick the elbows out just a tiny bit to keep my place in line at the bar, and stick a hip out just a little for a place to stand to hang out and take in the costumes. It was hard to get pictures because everything was so dark and in constant motion. 🙂

Bar Decor:

I felt lonesome in the crowd and focused on people watching. The individuals that I chatted with were also people peeping. I ended up being at this event for about 2.5 hours. That was plenty for me. 😁 I enjoyed the costumes, the music and the energy of the place. It was fun to actually dress up for Halloween for once too! I was ready to call it a night and go home though. I would have enjoyed this event much more with friends.

14 Down, 36 to go!! I have 2 dates actually scheduled, so hopefully that means I’ll be better about posting!! Thank you for stopping by!

  1. I LOVE make up, always have since being a kid which also goes along with my degree in theatre so make up takes up a portion of my life and I just have to say you didn’t do awful! Pictures make skeletons look soooo easy but blending and getting it right is so hard but you looked awesome in your costume and your face looked great! I love how courageous you are

    • Thank you for the kind words! ❤️ The little dress up effort inspired me to start playing around with makeup a little more. We celebrate Dia de Los Muertos in Tucson with a HUGE All Souls Procession every year, so the skills would definitely be put to good use for sure!! 😁 I’d much rather use makeup instead of the costume paints. I think the makeup breathes better and the look has so much more dimension and beauty when the shading is done right.

  2. Make up looked Good! Not to much but subtly enough to create the look! I went to a Halloween party last year with the family, I think you’re right going with some one would have been better but fair play to you for getting out there girl! Many many many wouldn’t and don’t. Looking forward to the next ones!
